A Village with a Past --- and a Future

In many respects Treeton stands alone. Treeton as a hamlet, a village, and a township has age, but it is
A green old age, unconscious of decays
That proves the hero born in better days

It is a debatable point whether Treeton was born in better days, and the time of its birth is so long ago that the matter cannot now be settled. What we do know is that Treeton today is unconscious of any decay. Proud of its past, Treeton today is virile enough to look with confidence to the future, and with such a self-confident and contented community there is justification for that confidence.

Unlike many colliery townships, Treeton is neither of modern nor of mushroon growth, unlike a number of communities, Treeton believes in its "ain folk" and trusts them; it has learned from experience that there are no friends like old friends; and it has also learned from experience that this trust is mutually advantageous.

Treeton can point to other distinctions: To its great and glorious history; to its associations with eminent people and great events; to the antiquity of its Parish Church, where the Curfew is still rung; and to the fact that it was the first village in England to have its streets lighted with electricity. Treeton is both ancient and modern.

The greater part of the present population of Treeton is employed in or about the Treeton and Orgreave Collieries of the United Steel Companies Ltd. The L.M.S. Railway Company have a station in the village, which is also reached from Sheffield and Rotherham by motor bus. Accomodation is provided at the schools for upwards of 500 children, and thanks to the progressive spirit of its Parish Council and other public representatives, its prblic services are second to none.

This record of Treeton would be incomplete without some reference to the great part taken in its industrial development by Sir Frederick Jones, Bart, and the members of his family, and also to the human interest they have always shown in the welfare of the inhabitants.

Presentation of Souvenir Jubilee Mugs

Capt. C. F. Ward Jones, General Manager of the Rother Vale Collieries Branch of the United Steel Companies Limited, has very generously provided Jubilee Souvenir Mugs for the children of Treeton and Orgreave. This gift will recall similar presentations on previous occasions by his father Sir Frederick Jones, Bart. It is sincerely hoped that these mugs will be preserved by the recipients as a fitting souvenir of this great occasion.

Orgreave

Orgreave lies between the boundaries of the City of Sheffield and Treeton, in the Rural District of Rotherham. There is no Parish Council, the purely local authority being vested in the Parish Meeting of which Mr. J. E. England is Chairman and Mr. J. Frost the Hon. Secretary. The representative on the Rotherham Rural Disatrict Council is Mr. P. S. Geldard.

Like Treeton, Orgreave claims associations with Sir Walter Scott's Ivanhoe and also, like Treeton, it is now industrially inclined, in the sense that its energies are directed towards coal mining and extracting the valuable by-products of coal. In many respects Orgreave resembles Treeton and the adjacent villages and in all probability it passed through the same vissitudes of Saxon and Roman ownership.
