Background
Rufford is situated on the edge of Sherwood Forest. The Bloom family have so far been traced back to Rufford in the early 1700s.
Did they come from this area? There are no entries in the Parish Registers before William, son of Paule Bloome was born in 1726.The hosiery industry began to expand in Nottingham in early 1700s, and there was a decline in the textile industry in Norfolk (where some Blooms¹ were found in the Parish Registers from as early as 1596), in the latter half of the 18th century. Nottingham population goes from 5000 in 1700 to 10000 in 1750 to 28000 in 1800. There were plenty of opportunities for agricultural workers on estates such as the Duke of Newcastles at Rufford, where in 1750 Rufford Lake was created as source to power the Corn mill.
The industrial development of Sherwood Forest in north Nottinghamshire during the 17th century is well documented. Iron furnaces or forges occured at Carburton, Clipstone, and Kirkby in Ashfield in Nottinghamshire. The lead and iron industies consumed vast quantities of trees to make charcoal, numerous documents refer to the felling or leasing of woods for these purposes throughout Sherwood Forest.By July 1765 many existing roads were closed and new ones opened. The existing Ollerton to Nottingham Road (King's Stand Breck to the S.E. corner of Sherwood Forest) was closed and a new road was opened across Sherwood Forest: Across Forest at Rufford and Inkersall to Ollerton - Nottingham Road.
Inkersall Farm and Inkersall Grange Farm on Nottingham Road, Rufford were both part of the Rufford Abbey Estate which was for sale in 1928.
¹Is there a connection with Castle Rising where in 1629 Henry Bloom sold to his daughter two pieces near Sedgeford Gate and Watery Lane ..?
