Treeton Mining Training Centre

 

Originally the site was an AckAck base, it later housed Italian Prisoners of War.

About 1947 using Nissan huts, training began and continued until 1966 when a new centre was opened which included 4 classrooms a gym and a workshop.

Underground training was in the Flockton Seam at Orgreave. When this closed the Wath Wood seam at Treeton was used for training.

As well as Treeton, Trainees came from :

Initially training was for Juveniles up to 18 years and Adults

Eventually all entrants received both surface and underground training. Short Courses were included:

Centre Managers were - Commander Edwards, Mr. Dakin, until 1966, W.Hatfield, until 1980 and G. Wilson from 1980 until 1986, when the Centre closed. Staff were then transferred to Manvers Training Centre.
